I was approached by the elementary school in my neighborhood to create a learning activity that would help students with a new recycling initiative. After the school purchased new recycling and compost bins, they found that students were having a difficult time differentiating between the different bins.
I created an interactive micro-learning activity that could be sent to student devices. After completing the activity, students would have a better understanding of how to better use the bins in their school.
Project Audience: K-5 students at a local public elementary school
Genially: creation of interactive learning content
Photoshop: editing and manipulation of images used in the project
Adobe Audition: recording and editing the audio content used in the project
As the intended audience for this project was elementary students, I wanted it to have a youthful feel. I chose a bright and cartoon-like backdrop for the project, and a school-aged girl as the "host."
These choices would be more appealing to young learners and would serve to draw them in to the topic and content.
"Alice"- the host of the project
Furthermore, to engage learners, I wanted to add several interactive elements and also some gamification. This was achieved through the "window" feature in Genially, where users would have to click on items in the presentation in order to progress. This feature was used in a section where learners would have to interact with different bins to see what items they contained.
Learners are tasked with interacting with each bin in order to progress in the activity. When clicked, a pop-up window emerges displaying the contents of each bin.
Gamification was achieved through an activity where students would help Alice "clean-up" the neighborhood by placing various items in the correct bin. While fun, this activity checked for understanding by providing feedback for correct and incorrect responses.
A student placing a candy bar wrapper in the recycling bin would receive corrective feedback...
...But placing the wrapper in the trash bin is rewarded as a correct response.
This was a fun activity and it was a pleasure to use my talents to help a local school in my community.
